The Power of Inclusive Language: Gender Equity and Beyond

Jan 06, 2025
Connect

Inclusive language goes beyond words—it’s about creating a world where everyone feels respected and valued.

How we speak directly impacts the way we connect, empower, and include others.

Gender equity is a key part of this shift.

Phrases to Avoid and Why

"That's crazy"

Why: This trivializes mental health struggles.

Try instead: "That's surprising" or "That's unexpected."

"You guys"

Why: It excludes people who don’t identify as male.

Try instead: "Everyone," "Team," or "Y’all."

"Manpower"

Why: It reinforces outdated gender roles.

Try instead: "Workforce," "Staff," or "Team."

"Powwow"

Why: It appropriates Indigenous culture.

Try instead: "Meeting" or "Brainstorm session."

"Grandfathered in"

Why: This phrase originates from discriminatory practices.

Try instead: "Legacy status" or "Exempted."

Gender-Focused Examples

"Mankind"

Why: It overlooks all genders and frames humanity as male.

Try instead: "Humankind" or "Humanity."

"Chairman"

Why: It assumes leadership roles are male by default.

Try instead: "Chair" or "Chairperson."

"Ladies and gentlemen"

Why: This language excludes nonbinary individuals.

Try instead: "Everyone," "Distinguished guests," or "Esteemed colleagues."

"Mothering" or "Fathering" a project

Why: It assigns stereotypical parental roles to tasks.

Try instead: "Nurturing the project" or "Leading the project."

Practical Tips for Choosing Inclusive Language

Avoid assumptions. Don’t make gender or identity assumptions when addressing someone. Ask for pronouns or titles if unsure.

Use gender-neutral terms. Replace words like "husband/wife" with "spouse" or simply use "they" in place of "he" or "she."

Be intentional. Words have power—ensure your language reflects diversity and inclusion.

Self-correct gracefully. If you make a mistake, acknowledge it, adjust, and move forward with a commitment to improve.

Why It Matters

Choosing inclusive language isn’t about being politically correct—it’s about showing respect, reducing harm, and building spaces where everyone feels they belong. These changes may feel small, but they pave the way for stronger relationships and equitable workplaces.
