Building Bridges Through Meaningful Conversation

Sep 25, 2025
Connect

Hello, to our emotionally intelligent achievers,

When was the last time a conversation changed everything for you?

Not small talk. Not status updates. But the kind of dialogue that opens doors, shifts perspectives, and creates pathways you hadn't considered before.

At AWL, we believe that leadership isn't just about having the right answers, it's about asking the right questions and creating space for the conversations that matter most.

That's why we lead with two brains.

As Co-founders, we don't just talk about dialogue and development, we live it. When Jen's counselling & EDI expertise meets Melissa's business strategy experience, we create the exact kind of meaningful conversation that bridges gaps and builds solutions. Think about it: one brain sees the human story behind every challenge, while the other brain maps the systems and processes needed to solve it.

That dialogue between perspectives?

That's where real development happens.

Just like Sherry Lippincott's work at Literacy Link South Central connects the language of business owners with the needs of apprentices, we've learned that the most powerful solutions emerge when different viewpoints collaborate to create something neither could build alone.

You'll hear more from Sherry in our guest feature below, her approach perfectly demonstrates how dialogue develops lasting change.

This month's G.U.I.D.E. spotlight is D – Dialogue and Develop

Leadership thrives through connection.

Real development happens when we engage in meaningful dialogue with others to exchange ideas, address challenges, and build understanding. It's about using these conversations to develop actionable plans that drive progress, both for yourself and your team.

Collaboration isn't just nice to have, it's the key to sustainable growth.

So this month, we invite you to pause and ask yourself:

🔹 What conversations am I avoiding that could unlock new possibilities?

🔹 How can I create more space for dialogue that develops both people and solutions?

🔹 What would change if I approached challenges as opportunities for collaborative development?

This isn't about talking more, it's about talking with intention.

Whether you're building partnerships, developing your team, or creating community connections, meaningful dialogue is where transformation takes root.

Now, let's explore what that looked like across September.

What We’ve Been Up To at AWL – September Update, from Jen:

Is September a reset for you?

For me, it always feels like a “New Year.” Kids are back in school, summer break is over, and it’s time to get back to routine.

At AWL, we didn’t exactly take a break. We launched new groups, finalized our speaker season, and, most importantly, took time for reflection.

Not the surface-level kind, but the kind where you pause and ask:

Are we actually moving forward, or just spinning our wheels?

Here’s what we realized: often, it’s not that we’re failing to reach our goals, it’s that we’re overlooking the smaller wins that build the path to the big ones.

And when we miss those, it’s easy to feel stuck.

So here’s our encouragement to you: take some time this month for honest reflection. What’s gone well? What hasn’t? Do you need to adjust your approach, or invite someone new onto your team to help carry you forward? Sometimes reflection and meditation are the very things missing from our success formula.

Where's Jen?
August and September have been such full months for me, and I’ve had the chance to do some much-needed reflecting. Last month, I shared that I was feeling overwhelmed. Taking time to pause has helped me re-focus, and I’m stepping into this fall season with clarity and energy.
I’ve been busy with some work travel and will be on the road again at the end of this month and into October for training. After that, I’ll be taking a short pause, because my wedding is in October! I think that’s a pretty good reason to slow down, don’t you?

This fall, I’ll be giving a keynote in Toronto, running workshops for the University, and working with a few of our clients from last year to provide full day retreats (no spa, we will be learning but connecting). I’m also really looking forward to our upcoming speakers in the AWL Speaker Series, I hope you’ll join us!

On another note, I’ve had several people reach out about speech coaching, so I’m opening just two more spots in the Speaking Confidently program starting September 29th from 8–9am.

Speaking Confidently is a small, hands-on program (only 5 participants) designed for people who want to get past the nerves and actually feel good about speaking. Over several virtual sessions, we’ll cover both the craft of writing a clear, engaging talk and the confidence needed to deliver it.

You’ll also have two private one-on-one coaching sessions with me to dig into your unique goals. And because practice is where real growth happens, the program ends with an opportunity to present and get supportive feedback.

If you’ve ever dreaded presenting at work, struggled to get your point across, or just wanted to feel more natural when all eyes are on you, this program is for you.  Message me at jen@awlpartners.com so we can book a time to chat and see if this is a good fit.

Also, wanted to remind you of an Exciting Collaboration: AWL is also supporting Adam Malamis with Blue Goose on an amazing project! Gartner projects that AI-driven search will account for 40% of all queries by 2026. This shift means the way people discover businesses, experts, and ideas is changing faster than ever. Traditional SEO alone will not secure visibility. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the emerging discipline that ensures your content is found, cited, and trusted by platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. In this AWL seminar, you'll see live demonstrations of how generative engines shape results, gain a one-page action checklist, and leave ready to apply GEO to your business.

In September, Melissa has been in full "back to it mode", building, speaking, and connecting! A big part of her focus has been helping clients grow through business development strategies, whether that's unlocking new funding and grant opportunities or strengthening their sales processes so they can convert with confidence.

She also had the chance to step out into the community and join the Little Engines That Could event here in London, where she shared her love of sales (yes… selling can actually be fun!).

On the speaking front, Melissa spoke at the Canadian Association for Women in Construction National conference, diving into how to Master Difficult Conversations at work. Up next, she'll be heading to Phoenix for the United States Swim School Association National Conference, where she'll be speaking on how to use Emotional Intelligence as a Leadership Superpower.

Behind the scenes, she's spent time catching up with partners new and old about the benefits of partnering with All Women L.E.A.D. in the amazing social impact work we get to do!

Stay tuned for new partnerships being announced soon (and as always reach out if you want to chat about partnership opportunities mel@awlpartners.com !).

And because she can't sit still for long, Melissa is already gearing up for a full lineup of engagements and workshops in October, including 2 Mega Business events with both the London and St Thomas Chamber of Commerce, speaking for a group of HR and People leaders, and as always supporting clients! All designed to help teams lead smarter, sell better, and build workplaces that work!

Email us at hello@awlpartners.com if you'd like to join us!

YES, we know, we are busy BUT we are loving it!

Talk soon!

With gratitude,
Jen

P.S. If you’d like us to come meet with your team, let us know, we’ll customize a leadership program just for you!

We offer custom workshops, keynotes, and leadership development for companies and communities that want to elevate their impact.

Guest Feature: Building Bridges in the Skilled Trades

This month, we're excited to feature insights from Sherry Lippincott at Literacy Link South Central, whose work beautifully demonstrates how Dialogue and Develop creates lasting impact in unexpected places.

When we talk about developing others, we often think about traditional corporate settings. But Sherry's work reminds us that meaningful dialogue happens everywhere, including bridging the gap between employers and apprentices in the skilled trades. Her approach to connecting, communicating, and developing solutions shows us that leadership development isn't confined to boardrooms, it's wherever people are ready to grow together.

Step Up and Succeed - Foundational Skill Building for the Skilled Trades

By Sherry Lippincott, Literacy Link South Central

Now in its second year, the Step Up and Succeed initiative at Literacy Link South Central offers free and low-cost tools and support for employers and trainers in the skilled trades. Through our Resource Hub, we offer a one-stop shop of over 20 new resources developed with the needs of small, non-unionized employers in mind. These tools are specially designed to help support employers with their attraction, retention and workforce upskilling needs.

The Resource Hub includes sections like:

How to Become an Employer of Choice, detailing how young workers' values often embrace authenticity, inclusion, openness and acceptance of diversity.

Become an Apprentice Sponsor, which gives employers a simple step-by-step guide to support apprentices on their journey from start to finish. It also offers strategies for employers to support individuals from equity-deserving groups in joining the trades, including women, newcomers and people with disabilities.

Communication Strategies, which emphasizes the importance of clear, effective communication in the skilled trades workplaces. This section offers support for building these skills and demonstrates how effective communication saves time and money for employers.

And much more.

The hub also helps employers connect apprentices to free skills upgrading through Ontario's Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) programs. These programs offer apprentices targeted math, reading, writing, digital and communication strategies based on the needs of the skilled trades workplace, helping them be successful both on-the-job and during their in-school apprenticeship training.

New this year! Literacy Link South Central is now offering One-on-One support to help employers use the Step Up and Succeed suite of services. We can provide personalized support, customized to the needs of employers who:

  • would like to know more about our resources and how to use them
  • are struggling with the apprenticeship process
  • want tools to help their apprentices succeed
  • would benefit from connecting to local and provincial organizations that offer support for apprentices and employers in the skilled trades

If you run a small to medium-sized business in the industrial, motive power, construction or service trades, we can support you and your apprentices. Check out the Step Up and Succeed Resource Hub to access all the tools mentioned in this article and sign up for one-on-one support at https://www.llsc.on.ca/employer-resource-hub

New tools are being added to the Resource Hub based on feedback from employers and partners across the skilled trades community. Check back often as the resource hub is also being remodeled to enhance accessibility and ease of use!

Rest is a leadership strategy.

We talk about being busy, but we also know that leaders who run on empty lead teams into the ground. Leaders who rest lead sustainably.

How do you recharge when work gets heavy?

At AWL, we know that rest isn't weakness, it's wisdom. But understanding how to rest effectively? That's where coaching and counselling make all the difference.

Coaching helps you build sustainable systems around rest and recovery. It's about examining your current patterns, identifying what drains your energy versus what restores it, and creating actionable strategies that protect your capacity before you hit empty.

Counselling addresses the deeper beliefs that make rest feel impossible. It's about understanding why you might feel guilty for taking breaks, why you equate busy-ness with worthiness, or what fears drive you to keep going even when your body and mind are asking you to pause.

Both help you lead from fullness instead of depletion. Both recognize that rest isn't a bad thing, it is selfish, in a good way & it's strategic.

Because here's what we've learned: the leaders who last aren't the ones who work the hardest. They're the ones who work the smartest, and that includes being smart about recovery.

đź“© Curious to know how this path can support you? We're here to help. Let’s talk: hello@awlpartners.com  or visit awlpartners.com/coaching-and-counselling.html

You’ve seen the what—now let’s pause on the why, and choose what’s next with intention.

We believe that leadership development isn't a solo journey, it's built through connection, collaboration, and the courage to engage in conversations that matter.

This month, we've explored what it means to use dialogue as a development tool, to bridge different perspectives, and to create solutions through collaborative thinking.

Because the future isn't built on one-way communication or isolated decision-making.

It's built on dialogue that develops both people and possibilities.

So here's your reminder:

â–¶ The conversations you're avoiding might be the ones that unlock your next level

â–¶ Development happens fastest when it happens together

â–¶ And you're not leading in isolation—we're building this with you, every step of the way

Until next time, stay curious about others' perspectives, stay open to collaborative solutions, and stay connected to the power of meaningful dialogue.

Rooting for your growth, always,

The AWL Partners Team
We help people and teams grow smarter with their emotions to work better and achieve more.

Actually I, Can Hub Member Business Spotlight:

Are you leading with confidence or holding back?

Julie Dupont (Reimagine Leadership) & Shirley Brooks (AWL Partners) present to you the Power Moves Collective.

We know that leadership today requires more than strategy. It requires confidence, clarity, and the emotional intelligence to navigate tough conversations without burning out.

That’s why we created the Power Moves Collective, a monthly group mentorship program designed for women-identifying leaders who are ready to step into leadership on their own terms.

Inside the Collective, you’ll practice:

  • Emotional intelligence as a leadership advantage

  • Assertive communication that feels like respect, not risk

  • Navigating conflict without losing relationships

  • Leading through change with trust and presence

And yes, you’ll also step into the Elevated Seat (our version of the hot seat), where your real-world challenges are supported by the group in real time.

We start October 20th at 1PM EST, and spots are limited to keep the group intimate.

Remember, all 1 month or more Packages come with free access to the Monthly Virtual Personal Development Webinars "Let's Get Intentional" that are CPD accredited.
